10 Reasons why we love Providence

By mdblog - September 21, 2015

1. Top-tier foodie scene

[caption id="attachment_4348" align="aligncenter" width="640"]Flickr: Lori L. Stalteri Flickr: Lori L. Stalteri[/caption] Providence has a world-class restaurant scene that could keep foodie enthusiasts quite busy. Thanks to Johnson & Wales culinary school and Providence's unique arts and music culture, we maintain  top-tier talent when it comes to the culinary arts. There's the famed  Gracie’s & Nick’s on Broadway, but don’t forget Ogie’s Trailer Park (you have to try the Chicken Sandwich: it’s transcendent) or Harry’s Bar & Burger for a meal just as delicious and much easier on the wallet. Stop by the Duck & Bunny afterwards for a cupcake or a drinking chocolate.

2. City with a small-town feel

[caption id="attachment_4349" align="aligncenter" width="640"]Flickr: Chris Anderson Flickr: Chris Anderson[/caption] Providence is a big city, and there’s always new things to discover and people to meet. But you can’t beat a town where you’re bound to see someone you know and chat with when you’re at the grocery store, gym, or just taking a walk around College Hill or down Blackstone Boulevard on one of our gorgeous fall days. Newbies don't believe that it will happen to them, until it does. It always does.

3.  “Keep Providence Weird”

[caption id="attachment_4350" align="aligncenter" width="640"]big nazo Flickr: Amy Hope Dermont[/caption] We have a world class creative scene. A “Big Nazo” (stop by their lab one of these days and take selfie’s with the creatures) puppet might be lurking around the corner or throwing an impromptu dance party on the street. We have top tier design agencies, artists, and we’re the home of H. P. Lovecraft where “Weird Fiction” began. Not only do we create gorgeous art, we celebrate them too.

4.  The History

[caption id="attachment_4351" align="aligncenter" width="640"]Flickr: Sean Flickr: Sean[/caption] Providence, Rhode Island has a really cool history. One that;s unique to other New England states. For example, did you know RI declared independence from Britain before the rest of the colonies? Check out the Gaspee Affair where some patriotic Rhode Islanders attacked, looted and torched the British customs schooner. (Don’t try this at home.)

5.   The Coffee

[caption id="attachment_4352" align="aligncenter" width="640"]coffee-exchange Flickr: Phillip Capper[/caption] Need a hot cup of Joe to get out of work for a minute? We have great coffee shops. Think Coffee exchange, New harvest, and Dave’s to name just a few of the locally owned coffee spots. Coffee Exchange & New Harvest roast their own beans, and New Harvest provides the beans to many of the restaurants around Providence. Have a fresh pastry too!

6. Stunning  Historic Buildings and its Architecture

[caption id="attachment_4353" align="aligncenter" width="640"]Flickr: Will Hart Flickr: Will Hart[/caption] Don’t forget about the amazing architecture. From the Superman Building, to just walking down Benefit street, to the gorgeous buildings downtown. When you look up, you’re bound to find something to admire.

7.  Waterfire/Providence River

[caption id="attachment_4354" align="aligncenter" width="640"]Flickr: Liz West Flickr: Liz West[/caption] Waterfire & the Providence River. Who doesn’t enjoy bonfires and music? Take the kids or your date, and enjoy hot fires on a cool summer night in scenic Providence. You could get a seat at a restaurant, or take a gondola ride, or just pick up some Somosa’s or a beer and walk around the river. Bonus: we even have  living statues perform.

8. The term "Hipster Professional" comes to mind

[caption id="attachment_4355" align="aligncenter" width="640"]Flickr: Susan O'Connell Flickr: Susan O'Connell[/caption] There’s something for everyone. There’s a cool creative scene with the hipster crowd if you want to enjoy a night out at the Salon. There’s also a great startup scene and professional scene hosting  any networking events almost any night of the week.

9. The  Music Scene

[caption id="attachment_4357" align="aligncenter" width="640"]Flickr: Ian Bauer Flickr: Ian Bauer[/caption] From local bands or DJ’s, to the latest pop band making their way across the country you have your pick of the litter in Providence. Have you been to Fete yet? What about the Parlour? Firehouse 13? The Spot Undergound? Dusk? AS220? You could probably hear a new band play every night in Providence and never hear the same band twice.

10.  Fall & Spring

[caption id="attachment_4358" align="aligncenter" width="640"]Flickr: Josh McGinn Flickr: Josh McGinn[/caption] What could be more magical than New England fall foliage? For being the Creative Capital of America, we think it's fitting to have bright, beautiful pops of color covering the cityscape  of Providence. Put on your comfiest sweater and new suede boots, then head over to your favorite Starbucks and get a pumpkin-spiced latte...just kidding. We'd prefer you'd get the real thing at Coffee Exchange or White Electric. READ: "5 Insanely Beautiful US Cities in the Fall" by Huffington Post
